Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young child. Her aunt was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was in college when she became interested in production for television journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury and examine their junk. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at small production studios right after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
